NOT BELONGING
This project was for my Interdiciplinary critic class at the University of Cincinnati. It was exhibited at Victory Park.
Not Belonging is an installation artwork that talks about immigrant’s confusions of not knowing where they belong, and or what they call home.
I am interested in this topic because as a foreigner in this country, I have found myself just like many immigrants, out of place, isolated, neither from here nor from there. The process of cultural adaptation can be very challenging because it drives you to face a new world with an unknown social system, integrating into a new community with different customs, values, and beliefs.
Not Belonging it is a temporary movable device. It has the shape of a cube inside of another cube, this wants to convey the feelings of being capsulated in a confusion stage of not knowing where you belong. The blue light coming from the floor would produce the feeling of being in a cold and temporary space. The walls have multiple windows that let yellow light into space. These represent all the possible paths that could remind you of a fragment of what home is. However, due to the multiple open windows, it´s difficult to know where you belong.
The emergency blankets are used to cover the walls to follow the concept of being part of a refugee situation. These blankets wrap up the thoughts of living in a temporary stage, far away from home, knowing that the next day life could shift directions, and the only secure thing you have its yourself a is yourself.
Materials: 16 warm lights, white plastic sheets, sound effects, tubes, velcro, emergency blankets, 3 blue lights, 9 installation foam.
